Ordnance Survey, Southampton, Hampshire – Internal Mobility Programme and Hiring Manager’s Training / Accreditation
Internal Mobility Programme / Talent Acquisition Training for Hiring Managers
OS employs approximately 40,000 people and is renowned for its intellectual property, supplying vital geospatial data to the UK government. During a period of transformation, OS approached Career Matters for support as it realigned a substantial portion of its operations to expand into the private sector. This shift included establishing partner networks, launching subsidiaries, forming joint ventures, and creating start-up accelerator hubs.
To meet its ambitious commercial goals, OS introduced an internal mobility programme to help employees identify their transferable skills, enhance their confidence, and apply for newly created roles within the organisation. These roles often required employees to compete with external candidates, further highlighting the need for targeted development.
Our Approach
Career Matters collaborated closely with OS to design and deliver a tailored programme addressing the organisation’s unique needs. This included:
- Skills Identification Workshops: Helping employees recognise their transferable skills and map them to emerging opportunities.
- CV Writing and Interview Skills Training: Equipping employees with the tools and confidence to present themselves effectively during internal recruitment processes.
Following the success of this initial support, OS invited Career Matters to extend its expertise further by:
- Talent Acquisition Training for Hiring Managers: Upskilling managers to ensure a fair and effective selection process, including how to identify and evaluate talent in alignment with the organisation’s strategic goals.
- LinkedIn Training for Customer-Facing Employees: Empowering staff to enhance their professional presence and leverage LinkedIn as a tool for networking and business development.
The Impact
The programme enabled OS employees to transition successfully into new roles, supporting the organisation’s transformation while retaining valuable talent. Hiring managers gained greater confidence in their ability to recruit effectively, ensuring a robust and equitable selection process. Meanwhile, customer-facing employees strengthened their external engagement through improved LinkedIn profiles and networking strategies.
Testimonial: Alex Wharton, Head of Talent & Resourcing, Ordnance Survey
“We’ve had Julie facilitating our CV Writing and Interview Skills training for a year now, and the feedback we receive from employees about Julie’s sessions is always really positive. So much so that it prompted us to ask Julie to refresh the content of our Hiring Manager’s accreditation workshop as well and start running them for us. And more recently, Julie moved to offering 1-1 surgeries via Microsoft Teams or Zoom to our employees who are preparing to apply for internal vacancies.
Julie has been a delight to work with – professionally she knows her subject matter as an expert should, but it’s her genuinely caring approach that seems to give people that extra level of confidence you need when you’re looking to develop your career. We’re very pleased to have Julie’s support to help us increase internal mobility at OS.”
